SELF PROTECTION

Dave Joyce has used a wide variety of training, influences and experience over 25 years of martial arts and life experiences to develop this constantly evolving course. He would like to acknowledge his instructors past and present who have helped enormously including Master Yang, Jwing Ming, Arjarn Panya Kraitus, Kru Tony Moore, Master Toddy, Tuhon John Harvey, Tuhon Pat O’Malley, Guro Krishna Godhania Nino Bernardo, Guro Richard Crabbe De Bords and although Joyce has never been fortunate to train personally with the man, he would also like to acknowledge the influences of leading self protection expert Geoff Thompson.

He would like in particular to mention all of the instructors in both Sayoc Kali and Atienza Kali who have helped him develop further as a person and martial artist, especially Tuhon Chris Sayoc, Tuhon Tom Kier and all 3 Atienza brothers Guros Allain, Carl and Darryl. Both of these organisations have given Joyce the opportunity to help assist in the training of US Navy SEALS, FBI operatives and LEO’s and have also given him the chance to train in a range of areas, previously unexplored by Joyce, particularly pertinent to the overall arena of Self Protection.

The type of Self Protection course taught at SEAMA Academy has evolved (and indeed continues to do so) drastically, as has society, over the years. The course explains to participants the different type of scenario’s encountered in modern times whether confined to only verbal aggression (confined for whatever reason), encounters starting out as verbal/aggressive with the very possible threat of going “live” and obviously, an all out violent physical encounter, which is termed RUA (random unprovoked attack).

With such a wide area of reference, (only some areas are lectured/discussed), the vast majority of the course concentrates on the various types of physical encounters although a small amount of assertiveness and conflict resolution training is given.
Participants are also taught to cope with open hostility; utilising aggression training and simple exercises are practised to raise awareness, one of the key components necessary for the development of a sound self-protection plan. The “Fence” and “Line-Ups” are also emphasised and trained, as well as learning simple effective striking techniques, incorporating methods for improving delivery and power.

Basic public courses are run over an eight-week period with each class lasting 75-90minutes. Specialist courses (for at risk, care and community workers, security personnel, women’s groups and students) as well as private instruction are also available.
